Direct Instruction Program Descriptions

To correctly teach and implement Direct Instruction programs in your school, it is important to understand what each of these programs entails. Read through the short descriptions below to help you decide which program you might benefit from.

Spelling Mastery & Spelling Through Morphographs

These two excellent programs are designed to teach primary and secondary students how to spell using certain rules. They use phonemic, whole word, and morphemic strategies, so students can learn to spell thousands of words.
Under the direct guidance of their teacher, students learn rules and morphographs, thus expanding their knowledge about how words are spelt. These programs demystify spelling and help students to spell with confidence, as well as teach them why words are spelt the way they are. Lessons take only 15 to 25 minutes, can be taught to whole classes, are easy to timetable, and large numbers of students can be included.

CORRECTIVE READING DECODING

This program is engineered to change the behaviour of students who struggle with reading and therefore face frustration and diminished self-esteem.

It ensures efficient communication with the students, constantly evaluates their performance, and hinges on their mastery of the skills taught at each level. Cumulative skill development is reinforced with practice, giving students the best opportunity to learn the skill until it becomes automatic. This program contributes to increased self-esteem and enables students to experience academic success for perhaps the first time in their school careers.
Note: this program is designed to be taught alongside Corrective Reading Comprehension.

CORRECTIVE READING COMPREHENSION

Many students are proficient readers but do not comprehend what they read. These may be the same students who exhibit effective listening comprehension but poor reading comprehension. Such students often face ongoing difficulty with the increasing complexity of academic demands because they are unable to gain mean from print.

This program systematically teaches students strategies to gain meaning as well as the higher level skills of literal and interpretative comprehension. Students will be able to gain more from the written word when they learn the highly developed analytic and reasoning abilities that this program teaches.

Note: this program is designed to be taught alongside Corrective Reading Decoding.

READING MASTERY

Through a sequential series of stories, Reading Mastery teaches students to learn to read, then teaches them to read to learn, and finally, to learn through literature. Beginning with the foundational skills of phonemic awareness, through blending and decoding, to reading accuracy and rate – two major contributors to comprehension – Reading Mastery maintains that reading is an interactive process. The six levels of this program make it perfect for use in primary schools with regular and with gifted students.

Expressive Writing & Essentials for Writing

Essentials for Writing cover

Some students find it difficult to engage in the writing process because they have not yet mastered the fundamental skills.

These two Direct Instruction programs provide instruction ranging through the skills of punctuation, including quotations, subject-verb agreement, tense, inferences and interpretations, story retells, sequencing, editing, generating ideas, writing multi-paragraphs passages including autobiographical and biographical sketches, writing business letters and writing persuasive essays that provide details and supporting arguments.
